How is LA Sitter different to a nanny agency?

LA Sitter is a web directory, rescource and tool for finding trusted, pre-screened sitters.

Our self-service model allows us to offer competitively priced membership options and puts you in direct contact with the sitters when you need them.

We're a small family owned business, not a giant website. We know how important it is to find a sitter you can trust. So, unlike directories such as care.com, we don't let just any sitter register with us. 

We personally meet with each sitter, thoroughly screen them and offer them ongoing training and support, as well as closely monitoring feedback from your members - like you!

What qualifications do the sitters have?

Before we consider adding a sitter to the LA Sitter network, each sitter must:

  • Demonstrate at least 5 years of childcare experience and no less than 3 years in a professional setting
  • Have 2-3 exceptional references that verify their work experience
  • Have a high school diploma at minimum, with a strong preference given to those who have a college degree or ongoing training and education in child development
  • Hold current First Aid & CPR certifications
  • Be fingerprint background checked (LiveScan: Dept. of Justice & FBI)
  • Be registered childcare providers with TrustLine.org (CA Dept. of Social Services)
  • Be over 21 years old and legally allowed to work in the USA
  • Be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both spoken and written (they may also know a second language)
  • Show that they are warm, caring, intelligent and responsible childcare providers

Our team of sitters work with all of our members on an as-needed basis and many also have experience as full time nannies, teachers and teacher's aides, behavioral therapists, newborn care specialists, day care operators, dance instructors, music tutors and more!

Are the sitters First Aid and CPR certified?

Yes. Every sitter must keep their First Aid and CPR certifications current.

We also offer training days to any sitters who need to refresh their knowledge.

Are the sitters background checked?

Yes. All sitters are fingerprint background checked against Department of Justice and FBI records, and registered with TrustLine before we will promote their profile on the website.

TrustLine is a program administered by the Californian Department of Social Services and endorsed by the California Academy of Pediatrics. It’s the only authorized screening program of in-home caregivers in the state

To check if a child care provider is registered on TrustLine or to register, just call 1-800-822-8490. We are also happy to send members a copy of a sitter's approval letter.

Can sitters provide care for newborns?

Yes. There is no minimum and no maximum age that children must be. Some sitters are trained as Newborn Care Specialists (NCS), some have worked in daycare settings, are mothers themselves or have extensive experience with infants in their first year.

What is a Sitter vs a Nanny?

A babysitter is a person who offers care for children as needed, without a regular schedule. They are flexible and engaging, making sure children's needs and safety are met while following parents instruction and guidelines while they are away.

All LA Sitter babysitters are more than qualified to be nannies and many even hold positions as nannies outside of their LA Sitter bookings, but may be unable to commit to regular days and hours around their other client's needs.

A nanny may be either part-time or full-time and typically works regular hours with a family following a routine and working alongside parents to educate and nurture and offering suggestions as a member of the household.

Do you offer nanny placements?

No. LA Sitter is primarily designed to help families find babysitting and back-up care solutions. Our low membership prices are reflective of this. 

Our smaller hand selected network of sitters work with all of our members on an on-call basis and may be unable to commit to regular days and hours around their other client's needs.

Do you offer drop-off or day care services?

No. Sitters come to your location to provide care in the home, or at your accommodation, place of business or event.

On-site child care is not offered at our office location.

How much does it cost to join LA Sitter?

Membership to LA Sitter is $35 for a one time access pass (valid for one month with no ongoing obligations), $29 for a month-to-month subscription (cancel anytime), or $199 for the year. Sitter's wages are not included in the cost of membership.

Sitters typically charge $20-25 per hour for 1-3 children. Exact amounts may vary between sitters and will be confirmed by the sitter before booking.

How do I pay the sitter?

Sitters are independent child care providers and are to be paid directly for their hours worked. Parents can expect to pay $20-25 per hour for care of 1-3 children in the home, and sitters will quote their rates and booking terms including accepted payment methods before the booking. Cash and check are typically accepted, and many have an option to paid via card or app (Venmo, PayPal etc).

Membership fees to LA Sitter do not cover any part of a sitter's wages and in paying the sitter directly for their hours worked, members take on the role and responsibility of an employer.

Do the sitters have a minimum booking time?

Most sitters have a minimum booking time of 2-4 hours (3 hours on average). 

When sitters commit to a shorter booking with your family, it makes them unavailable for a full day's work. Most sitters will try to work two shorter bookings on those days to make up their full time hours.

Sitters also consider that it may take an hour to travel to and from each booking in Los Angeles traffic, so typically do not schedule more than two bookings (as that would equal up to four hours of travel) per day.

Do you offer free trials or discounts?

LA Sitter is not able to offer free trial periods. We have many members visiting Los Angeles who only need to use our service one time and we could not operate if we offered our services at no cost.

Members will find that we are very competitively priced when compared to a nanny agency. Agencies typically charge a membership fee plus a daily booking fee of $30 or more per day.

We also offer a money back guarantee in the rare event that you are not contacted by a suitable sitter for your requested date.

Simply email us at support@lasitter.com in the rare instance that you have not had any response from sitters within a 24 hour period, or call us at (323) 522-4479 between 10am-6pm M-F and we will happily refund your most recent payment and cancel your membership.

How do I cancel my membership?

If you have selected the One Time Access Pass, it has no recurring charges and your membership will expire after a one month period.

If you have selected a Monthly or Annual Membership, the subscription will automatically be charged to the card on file monthly or yearly.

You can cancel or change your plan or billing information anytime before the next billing date by logging in to your account at www.lasitter.com or contacting us by phone at (323) 522-4479 Monday to Friday between 10am and 6pm (PST) or sending an email to support@lasitter.com .

After cancelling, you will still be able to use your plan for any remaining days of the current billing cycle.

What is your refund policy?

If you have a subscription based membership that is automatically billed on a monthly or yearly basis and you forget to cancel your membership, we will provide a refund on your most recent charge provided you have not interacted with the site or initiated contacted with any sitters.

LA Sitter also offers a money back guarantee to any new members in the rare instance they did not receive a response from any suitable sitters within 24 a hour period (or before the requested booking time if this is sooner than 24 hours).

On written request, the membership fee will be refunded and the membership cancelled effective immediately.

LA Sitter will not refund any previous month's charges, only the most recent.
